Summer Workshop 2021

Trip to New York in 1921

Join us for a virtual trip to the city that famously never sleeps as we visit the Roaring Twenties in fiction, photographs, film, and more.

Skyscrapers and immigrants, dancehalls and newspaper boys: New York’s fame dates back to an era that made this place a thrilling center of innovation in technology, culture, and lifestyle. In the 1920s the old modes were challenged on every front: the horse-drawn carriage by the subway system, traditional European songs by jazz music, the Victorian novel by fast-paced journalistic writing. It was a place and time of change and excitement – a moment that this workshop seeks to reconstruct in a variety of media.

We will explore this modern urban space through different lenses. A selection of 1920s short stories will set the mood of the time. Contemporary photography helps to imagine daily life and relationships. Looking at period architecture will let us move through the lived space.

Your workshop project is to imagine a one-week trip to NYC in 1921, and to actively engage with the material to create a journal of notes, reflections, photos, collages. This journal becomes your personal souvenir of our exploration.

TEACHER:

Dr. Saskia Haag, researcher and instructor in the field of literary and cultural history, taught at university Konstanz and at Princeton University before joining the faculty at the AAIE. She has developed courses and workshops for kids and young adults on literature, theater, and art. Her current work focuses on early 20^th c. Viennese and international modernism.

Gemeinsame Veranstaltung mit dem KSÖ (Kuratorium Sicheres Österreich). Die Autoren des Buches "Sicher im Netz - So schützen Sie sich vor Hackern und Betrügern/Linde Verlag", Dipl. Kfm. Manfred Lappe und Oberst Mag. Walter J. Unger, präsentieren ihr eben erschienenes Sachbuch. Im Anschluss an die Präsentation findet eine Q & A Session statt, die Dr. Alexander Janda, Generalsekretär des KSÖ und Obmann des AAIE, moderiert.

Manfred Lappe ist ehemaliger Vorstand einer Wertpapierhandelsbank, Unternehmensberater und Autor zahlreicher Sachbücher

Walter Unger ist Oberst des Generalstabsdienstes und Leiter der Abteilung für Informations- und Kommunikationstechnik-Sicherheit und Cyber-Verteidigung im Abwehramt des österreichischen Bundesheeres.
